MEDIA ADVISORY

LOCAL JOURNALISTS TO BE RECOGNIZED
FOR EXCELLENCE IN REPORTING
WHAT: The San Diego County Substance Abuse Summit VII will recognize five San Diego news organizations that have deepened public understanding and support for alcohol and other drug prevention and recovery strategies. This is critical to successfully addressing substance abuse problems throughout the County.
Through in-depth reporting on a broad range of substance abuse issues, these new organizations have helped to change public perception of substance abuse and activated public debate towards finding viable solutions to the problems in the region. This is the second year the Summit will recognize San Diego County media organizations for their commitment to, and understanding of, substance abuse issues.
WHO:  Bonnie Helander, executive director of the San Diego County chapter of Mother Against Drunk Driving, will present the awards
WHEN: Tuesday, May 14, from 12:30 to 1:00 pm

WHERE: Town and Country Hotel and Convention Center, Golden West-California Ballroom, 500 Hotel Circle North, San Diego, Media Check-in table will be in the Atlas Foyer

WHY: The media have a profound impact on the public understanding of substance abuse issues and their impact in our communities. The Summit Media Awards acknowledge the achievement of media professionals who help to further the public discussion of substance abuse issues.
The Substance Abuse Summit, initiated by the County of San Diego in 1995, is part of a long-term strategy to reduce the personal, social, and economic costs related to substance abuse in the County. Substance Abuse Summit VII will take place May 13-14, 2002. For more information, visit www.substanceabusesummit.com
