| WHAT: The
San Diego County Substance Abuse Summit VII will recognize
five San Diego news organizations that have deepened public
understanding and support for alcohol and other drug
prevention and recovery strategies. This is critical to
successfully addressing substance abuse problems throughout
the County. |
|
Through in-depth reporting
on a broad range of substance abuse issues, these new
organizations have helped to change public perception of
substance abuse and activated public debate towards finding
viable solutions to the problems in the region. This is the
second year the Summit will recognize San Diego County media
organizations for their commitment to, and understanding of,
substance abuse issues. |

Bonnie Helander, executive director of the San Diego
County chapter of Mother Against Drunk Driving, will
present the awards |

WHY: The media have a profound
impact on the public understanding of substance abuse
issues and their impact in our communities. The Summit
Media Awards acknowledge the achievement of media
professionals who help to further the public discussion
of substance abuse issues.

The Substance Abuse Summit,
initiated by the County of San Diego in 1995, is part of a
long-term strategy to reduce the personal, social, and
economic costs related to substance abuse in the County.
Substance Abuse Summit VII will take place May 13-14, 2002.
